Philadelphians get chance to run up greased pole for prize at 1st-ever Red Bull event https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/entertainment/the-scene/red-bull-greased-pole-run-philadelphia/3885094/ 3885094 post 9614897 Red Bull https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/06/Red-Bull-greased-pole-run.jpeg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Red Bull has just about come up with the perfect event for Philadelphians — a run up a greased pole.

That’s right, Philadelphia’s favorite sports celebration is now a competition and it even takes place during the Summer Olympics.

Here’s your guide to the first-ever Red Bull Championship Run in Philadelphia:

When and where will the 2024 Red Bull Championship Run in Philly be held?

The free event takes place on Saturday, July 27, from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the estuary of Spruce Street Harbor Park at Penn’s Landing, organizers said.

What exactly is this greased pole event?

“In a city that is no stranger to champions (and its media-worthy celebrations), Red Bull Championship Run brings a whole new meaning to ‘grease the poles,'” organizers announced on June 13, 2024.

Don’t plan on climbing the slippery pole, plan to run up it with a goal in mind.

“This time, it’s not about climbing a greased pole,” Red Bull said. “It’s about sprinting up a greased telephone pole and testing one’s speed, balance, and will, to grab the flag at the end of the pole.”

“No more leisurely climbs: it’s an all-out sprint up a greased telephone pole to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat!” excitedly wrote organizers on the event website. “Fueled by the cheers (and jeers) of the crowd, competitors will have to test their speed, balance and will, to grab the flag at the end of the pole.

“The format is simple: grab the flag and advance to the next round. Fail to grab the flag and you’ll be relegated to the sidelines, watching in anticipation for your chance at redemption next year. It’s a test of speed, skill and sheer determination.”

After every 20 runners the pole gets re-greased, organizers said.

It turns out this all started in Turkey where the Red Bull Yagli Direk originated, organizers said. Yagli Direk translates loosely to “greased pole.”

According to event schedule page, the fun includes a DJ set, the playing of the National Anthem and awards.

Want to take the greased pole challenge?

Red Bull is letting pretty much anyone take the potential plunge for a price.

You can click this link to register. It will cost you just $29 (and possibly some of your dignity).

“If no participants grab flag during the main competition the participant that travels the furthest, in the shortest amount of time will be declared the winner,” organizers wrote.

The exact prize for winning will be announced closer to the event, organizers said.

Act as quick as you plan to run that pole since the event is capped at 100 participants.

“The ANNA Crusis Feminist Choir, Philadelphia Gay Men’s Chorus, and Philadelphia Voices of Pride will join the Orchestra for works by Bernstein, Copland, Tchaikovsky, Higdon, and more,” the orchestra said.

Tickets are free and will be available here starting on June 6.

Our City, Your Orchestra (June 26, 2024)

“As part of the Orchestra’s ongoing exploration of the works of Black American composer Still, Principal Librarian Nicole Jordan and Chanu have created a new set of definitive orchestral materials of his ‘Wood Notes’ that will be used for the first time in this performance, made possible by a generous grant from the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage.”

‘Summer winds down': When Philly is closing its free public pools in 2023 https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/philadelphia-public-pools-closing-2023/3624187/ 3624187 post 8835189 Getty Images https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2023/08/GettyImages-1096044096-2.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200

What to Know

  • “As summer winds down, pools will begin to close for the 2023 season,” Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Department said.
  • The free public pools began closing for the season on Sunday, Aug. 13.
  • The last pools are set to be drained on Sept. 6.

Time is quickly running out for you to dip your toes in Philadelphia’s free public swimming pools during the summer of 2023.

The Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Department began closing neighborhood pools on Sunday, Aug. 13.

“As summer winds down, pools will begin to close for the 2023 season,” Parks & Rec said in its closure announcement.

With school just around the corner, more public pools will be closed in the days and weeks ahead.

Initially, the City said that this summer — unlike last year — it hired enough lifeguards and staff to open all 60 pools — in total, about 700 pool staff, including 350 lifeguards were manning the pools. That goal took some time as some pools still weren’t open by late July and early August.

“Philadelphia Parks & Recreation worked hard to open and staff all 60 available outdoor public pools this summer,” Parks & Rec said on its website. “These pools provide residents with a free place to cool down and have fun. Thanks to our site supervisors, lifeguards, pool maintenance, and operations staff for making this happen!”

A handful of pools will close Pools will close on a rolling basis most days through early September.

When do free Philly public pools close?

Parks & Rec noted, “Pool closing dates are subject to change, and draining times may vary. Please confirm details with your local pool staff.”

Music, fireworks and patriotism on final day of Wawa Welcome America https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/entertainment/the-scene/wawa-welcome-america/the-grand-finale-of-wawa-welcome-america/3590764/ 3590764 post 8727998 https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2023/07/image-31.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all

What to Know

  • Sixteen days of free Wawa Welcome America fun came to a big finish on Tuesday, July 4th, with a concert featuring Ludacris and Demi Lovato on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway followed by fireworks.
  • Before the grand finale, there were hours of free fun from a Celebration of Freedom to a patriotic parade to the pre-party on the Parkway.
  • Here is a breakdown of the last day of the free 2023 Wawa Welcome America festival in Philadelphia.

Sixteen days of free fun in Philadelphia ended with a blast on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway Tuesday, July 4th, 2023.

The final day of 16 days of free Wawa Welcome America events featured music superstars (Demi Lovato and Ludacris), a patriotic parade and a fan favorite: fireworks.

“There’s no better place to celebrate the Fourth of July than right here in Philadelphia,” Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said.

Here’s a breakdown of all the events that took place.

‘Sorry Not Sorry’ the free concert on the Parkway was amazing

After a rain delay, rapper Ludacris opened the show by performing some of his biggest hits.

Adam Blackstonethe bassist behind some of music’s biggest acts — then followed and was later joined by WanMor, the sons of Boyz II Men member and Philly native WanyĂĄ Morris.

Popstar Demi Lovato then closed the show with an energetic rocking performance of some of her biggest hits.

Before the concert, Philadelphia Eagles and Power 99FM disc jockey, DJ Diamond Kuts and Snacktime, the brass heavy street band, teamed up to provide a collaborative performance at the Pennsylvania Lottery Groove stage.

Every good show needs a snack. Concert attendees enjoyed a free bag of Haribo Gummy Bears when they made it to the Parkway.

A long day of dancing and fun

It was a long, hot day (check out the latest First Alert Weather forecast), so concertgoers took care of themselves by staying hydrated and applying sunscreen, etc. Attendees checked out the Well-being on Wheels, complements of Independence Blue Cross, and received free health screenings, wellness information and nutritional takeaways.

Security Measures for 2023 party on the Parkway

Guests of the July 4th Parkway concert entered through a single entrance at Logan Circle at 20th Street.

Wawa Welcome America developed the new security plan with city officials “in an effort to create an event that will remain open and welcoming to all, but, at the same time, remain a safe space for all to enjoy,” Wawa Welcome America CEO Michael DelBene said.

Drones, weapons, controlled substances, alcohol, glass containers and fireworks were among the banned items within the fenced-in area.

Food, non-alcoholic beverages, chairs and blankets were among the items you could bring in.

The new measures ensured the safety of patrons after stray bullets — likely fired from up to a mile away –struck two police officers and sent attendees fleeing during the 2022 July 4th fireworks show.

What would July 4th be without fireworks?

Following the show, around 11 p.m., attendees gathered from Eakins Oval to Logan Circle for a rhythmic fireworks display, harmonized with a live DJ set by DJ Ghost.

Weather delay

While the concert was scheduled to start at 7 p.m., it was pushed to 8:30 p.m. due to a rain delay. Once the concert began however, the skies were cleared as attendees enjoyed a fun night of music and fireworks.

Getting to the Parkway concert

SEPTA ran all of its buses, trolleys and subway lines on a Sunday schedule on July 4, 2023. The transit agency also offered a special late-night Regional Rail service following the fireworks.

SEPTA laid out its full July 4th schedule on its website.

Couldn’t make it down to the Parkway? We got you covered!

The entire main stage concert and fireworks spectacular was broadcast live on NBC10 and TeleXitos as well as on NBC10.com and the NBC10 app.

Vanessa Williams concert and gospel concert canceled due to expected rain https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/entertainment/the-scene/wawa-welcome-america/wawa-welcome-america-day-15-concert-independence-mall/3590540/ 3590540 post 8725862 https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2023/07/Vanessa-Williams-concert-and-gospel-concert-canceled-due-to-expected-rain.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Wawa Welcome America’s scheduled Vanessa Williams concert and gospel concert were canceled Monday evening due to rain in the forecast.

Both concerts were set to take place at Independence Mall with the Vanessa Williams concert scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and the gospel concert — which had already been postponed on Sunday due to rain — scheduled to start at 8 p.m.

Williams — an award-winning singer, actress and former Miss America — had just stepped on stage and began singing to the crowd around 6 p.m. Monday when she was informed the show had been canceled by the National Park Service.

Williams told her fans she loved them and had wanted to perform but was told the concert would be canceled for safety reasons. She then waved to them before leaving the stage.

“The sun is shining. I said, can’t we just do like a half an hour? Can I sing acapella? Can I do ‘God bless America?’ And I got the side eye from the supervisor, the superintendent so no go,” Williams told NBC10 after the cancellation.

Ultimately however, Williams was still happy to be in Philadelphia for the festivities.

“I just want to thank everybody for coming out,” she said. “I love being a part of the Independence Day weekend here. Especially in Philadelphia. We were all ready to go.”

Williams had spoken with Philly Live’s Aunyea Lachelle last month about her scheduled concert.

The canceled gospel concert, meanwhile, would have been hosted by WDAS’ Patty Jackson. The Welcome America Mass Choir, directed by Austin Woodlin and Zak Williams, the Six Singing Sista’s EnsemblePhilly Remembers ChoirTreena Ferebee and the Generations were the scheduled performers. Some of the choir members still held an impromptu concert at a reception area however.

The rain didn’t start in Philadelphia until around 9:30 p.m. Monday, meaning both concerts could have occurred as scheduled. NBC10 reached out to the National Park Service for further comment on the decision to cancel the concerts. We have not yet heard back from them.

Despite the cancellations, attendees were still able to enjoy free admission at three separate museums on Monday as part of the second to last day of Wawa Welcome America.

Wawa Hoagie Day: Delicious details

It was Wawa Hoagie Day in Old City Wednesday afternoon.

Wawa said it crafted more than 25,000 hoagies using 7 tons of ingredients. They gave out 15,000 of those free turkey hoagies to the general public from noon to 3 p.m. at a block party to remember.

Some local celebrities got in on the fun festivities that date back to 1992. “Hoagie Day also featured a doubleheader ‘Hoagies for Heroes’ competition emceed by WMMR’s Preston and Casey, where Philadelphia’s police officers and firefighters will face off in a hoagie-building competition to benefit charities of their choice,” Wawa said in a news release before the event.

The firefighters won that battle for the second year in a row.

Members of the Pennsylvania Air National Guard and Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) Philadelphia then went head-to-head in a competition to benefit the USO.

“Wawa will make individual contributions of $3,000 to the charities of all four teams,” Wawa said.

Over 1,000 Wawa stores also celebrated Hoagie Day in their communities, donating more than 30,000 hoagies to neighborhood heroes, according to Wawa.

Some of those hoagies for heroes were handed out down the Jersey Shore after Philadelphia Eagles legend Jason Kelce and his brother, Travis, faced off in a hoagie-making competition Wednesday morning.

Hundreds of Wawa workers spent the morning building all that yumminess while dancing with mascot Wally Goose (and NBC10’s Karen Hua). Jason Kelce even Zoomed in to encourage the workers and thank them for their hard work getting all those sandwiches ready. “Let’s have some fun out there,” he said.

Ready to jump in? Philly's free public pools are starting to open https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/philly-free-public-pools-2023/3584880/ 3584880 post 3433893 Getty Images https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2019/09/Public-Pool-Philly-3.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 The time has come to dip you feet or your whole body in the water, Philadelphia’s free public swimming pools are opening just in time for the summer of 2023.

School District of Philadelphia students were dismissed for summer Tuesday, June 13, the first public pool opened Wednesday, June 14.

The city was set to mark the occasion with a pool opening party and renaming ceremony in West Philadelphia. Mayor Jim Kenney, Councilmember Jamie Gauthier and the family of Tiffany Fletcher — who was shot and killed while working at the formerly known as Mill Creek Recreation Center — were due to celebrate the opening of the pool at the newly named Tiffany Fletcher Recreation Center.

The Hunting Park and Samuel pools were also set to open Wednesday.

This summer — unlike last year — the City has enough lifeguards and staff to open all 61 pools — in total, about 700 pool staff, including 350 lifeguards are ready to work. Part of the push to get more lifeguards included parks and rec teaming up with Temple University to offer college credit to public pool lifeguards.

“Our public pools are a beloved part of summer in the City, and a great way to cool down, have fun, and stay active this summer,” Interim Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Commissioner Orlando Rendon said. “Like every municipality, seaside town, and private pool in the country, Philadelphia was facing a dire lifeguard shortage. With the support of so many Philadelphians, we are proud to  be able to open 100% of the available pools this summer, a critical step to providing free swim lessons and building Philadelphia’s pipeline of future lifeguards.”

The pool opening process, which last into mid-July, starts a week earlier than in 2022 and 41 pools will be open by the end of June.

“Thanks to hundreds of dedicated residents who stepped up and answered our call to work as lifeguards and give Philly kids the fun summer experience they deserve, we are bucking the national trend and on track to open 100% of available public pools this summer,” Mayor Jim Kenney said in a news release. “Our public pools are a sanctuary for residents on hot summer days, and an important place for communities to come together, relax, and recreate.”

The pools will also serve as a location for swim lessons for thousands of Parks and Recreation Department campers and community members.

Ten pools — including ones that haven’t opened since 2020 — are also designated as Swim Philly sites that offer comfortable seating and lounges, umbrellas and fun activities like you would normally see at a private swim club.

When will the pools open?

The City on Wednesday morning revealed its opening plan ” based on equity, available staffing, and to maximize residents’ access to pools in every part of the city.”
