Well, Netflix heard your wishes and is bringing a new immersive experience to Pennsylvania soon.

The streaming service just dropped their plans to open what they’re naming, “Netflix House.”

There will be everything from replica sets you’ll be able to explore as well as a chance to try various foods from your favorite shows. And shopping, Netflix says that there will be stores with exclusive merch.

Netflix says that it plans to open several locations, but the first two are set to open in King of Prussia as well as in Dallas in 2025.

“At Netflix House, you can enjoy regularly updated immersive experiences, indulge in retail therapy, and get a taste, literally, of your favorite Netflix series and films through unique food and drink offerings,” says Marian Lee, Netflix’s Chief Marketing Officer. “The venues will bring our beloved stories to life in new, ever-changing, and unexpected ways.”

Officials with the company say they chose King of Prussia because it is known as a popular shopping destination and is close to Philadelphia.

The upcoming Netflix House is expected to take over a former department store and be more than 100,000 square feet.

Netflix House is expected to be open all year with rotating themes and experiences.

Grease the pole! South Philly's Italian Market Festival is back https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/entertainment/the-scene/grease-pole-s2024-italian-market-festival/3860695/ 3860695 post 9550555 NBC10 https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/05/31172185925-1080pnbcstations.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 The 2024 South 9th Street Italian Market Festival returns this weekend with lots of vendors and tons of family fun, but mostly lots of tasty food and one greased pole ready for climbing.

“The nation’s oldest outdoor continuous market hosts this annual family event, which is Philadelphia’s largest block party,” according to the festival’s website.

When and where does the South 9th Street Italian Market Festival take place?

The festival takes over the South Philadelphia neighborhood on Saturday, May 18, and Sunday, May 19, from 11 a.m. to 5p.m. each day, stretching down South 9th Street from Fitzwater Wharton Streets and along Washington Avenue, Christian Street and other cross streets.

What can festivalgoers expect this weekend in South Philly?

“For seven city blocks, the 2024 Festival will be a celebration of culture, gastronomy, art and music,” organizers say on their website. “Featuring over 100 area vendors showcasing a range of cuisine and beverages. Visitors will have the opportunity to sample and purchase culinary delights.”

Go hungry, but also look to crave some culture and art.

“In addition to the food, the Festival will feature a wide range of music, services, souvenirs, jewelry, artists, and crafters,” according to organizers.

Half ball, music, the Procession of Saints and a greased pole with meats on top

The neighborhood is put on display through a series of events, including Saturday morning’s John Marzano Half Bal Tournament, Sunday’s Procession of Saints parade and Sunday’s DeerPark’s Hoagie Competition with a $5,000 reward for charity on the line.

Something that rocks both days in live entertainment each day with music from DJs Timmy DeSimone and Eric Bartello, Slay Town City, the Juliano Brothers, Philly Heart & Soul and more.

But, the biggest draw it the greased pole challenger each day and you and some friends can try your best to conquer the 30-foot pole.

“Located at the 9th & Montrose Tavolo Zona Piazza, The Grease Pole 30 feet high, greased with lard, teams will compete both Festival Days for prizes of meats, cheeses, gift cards and money, hanging from the top of the pole,” festival organizers say. “More importantly the winning team will have bragging rights for the entire year. Teams can register on-site day of the event.”

On Tuesday, May 14, 2024, the orchestra announced three free June community performances, including one that’s part of Wawa Welcome America festivities and another geared toward Pride.

Here is your guide to the free summer music:

Pride Celebration and Concert (June 25, 2024)

The orchestra will be joined by “RuPaul’s Drag Race” star and opera singer Sapphira Cristál, principal guest conductor Designate Marin Alsop and others on Tuesday, June 25, at 7 p.m. at Marian Anderson Hall at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Center City for the third-annual Pride Celebration and Concert.

“The ANNA Crusis Feminist Choir, Philadelphia Gay Men’s Chorus, and Philadelphia Voices of Pride will join the Orchestra for works by Bernstein, Copland, Tchaikovsky, Higdon, and more,” the orchestra said.

Tickets are free and will be available here starting on June 6.

Our City, Your Orchestra (June 26, 2024)

The orchestra heads up North Broad Street to Temple University’s Performing Arts Center for a North Philadelphia community festival and performance on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at 7 p.m.

The performance will include works by Adolphus Hailstork, Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Scott Joplin, Florence Price, Duke Ellington, Jessie Montgomery and William Grant Still.

“Led by Assistant Conductor Austin Chanu, the Our City, Your Orchestra Live performance will bring the spirit of the free digital series Our City, Your Orchestra—which uncovers and amplifies the voices, stories, and causes championed by Philadelphia organizations and businesses—to in-person audiences with the full Orchestra.

“As part of the Orchestra’s ongoing exploration of the works of Black American composer Still, Principal Librarian Nicole Jordan and Chanu have created a new set of definitive orchestral materials of his ‘Wood Notes’ that will be used for the first time in this performance, made possible by a generous grant from the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage.”

Tickets are free and reservations are encouraged starting on May 30 on this page.

Patriotic concert and Party on the Plaza (June 29, 2024)

Ensemble Arts Philly has teamed with Wawa Welcome America to bring a party to the Avenue of the Arts on Saturday, June 29, 2024, starting at noon. The orchestra will perform in Marian Anderson Hall during the larger event.

“Guests can take a break from the heat of the annual Avenue of the Arts Block Party to hear conductor Jeff Tyzik lead the Orchestra in Sousa’s ‘The Stars and Stripes Forever’ and ‘Liberty Bell’ marches, selections from John Williams’s scores for ‘The Patriot’ and ‘Lincoln,’ and more works honoring our nation and service members,” the orchestra said. “The performance will include the world premiere of Tyzik’s ‘Lift Off,’ which was commissioned by Bravo! Vail in honor of Tyzik’s 30th year at the Festival.”

Army veteran and Philly TV reporter Hank Flynn and seeing eye puppies from The Seeing Eye will also take part in the show.

Tickets are required and will be available here starting on May 17. “Seating is general admission and on a first-come, first-served basis,” the orchestra said.

Monster trucks to crush Philly this weekend. How to get in on the ‘Jam' https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/entertainment/the-scene/monster-jam-philadelphia-may-2024/3848137/ 3848137 post 9507291 Monster Jam https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/05/Grave-Digger-23_001.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 The real monsters come out in South Philadelphia this weekend as giant — dare we say “Monster” — trucks take over Lincoln Financial Field.

Grab your earplugs as Grave Digger, Megalodon, El Toro Loco, Kraken, Bad Company, Jester and the rest of the Monster Jam trucks (and drivers) roar at Monster Jam’s Stadium Championship East event on May 4, 2024.

Looking to experience the roar? Here’s your guide to getting tickets and even getting a chance to get up close to the monster trucks:

When does Monster Jam in South Philly start?

There are several tiers of timed admission to keep in mind for Saturday, May 4, 2024. The Pit Party starts at 9:30 a.m., doors to The Linc opens at 11 a.m., trackside access begins at 11:15 a.m. and the action begins at 1 p.m., according to Monster Jam.

Trackside access includes driver interviews, behind-the-scenes with pit crews, giveaways, opening ceremonies and more.

Which trucks and drivers will be crushing dirt at The Linc?

“The Stadium Championship Series East features 12 skilled athletes battling for the championship while tearing up the dirt in intense competitions of speed and skill,” Monster Jam said in a news release.

The drivers will compete in “Racing, 2 Wheel Skills and Freestyle” during the 2-hour program. Megalodon’s Todd Leduc said part of the competition includes fans voting for trucks through their phones.

Here’s the list of each driver and truck slated to participate Saturday:

  • Bad Company – John Gordon
  • Black Pearl – Cole Venard
  • El Toro Loco – Jamey Garner
  • Grave Digger – Tyler Menninga
  • Great Clips Mohawk Warrior – Bryce Kenny
  • JCB DIGatron – Tristan England
  • Jester – Matt Pagliarulo
  • Kraken – Nick Pagliarulo
  • Luca Stabilizer – Linsey Read
  • Max-D – Cody Saucier
  • Megalodon – Todd Leduc
  • Shaker – Ryan Disharoon

How can I buy tickets to Monster Jam in Philly?

Unless you’re 2 and under, you’ll need to pay for the full seat, but you’ll only be using the edge.

Tickets start at $37.40, including fees, on Ticketmaster.com. It’ll cost you more to sit close, with front row seats still up for grabs in the days leading up to the event for $170 each, before fees.

Sorry to be a party pooper, but Pit Party pregame tickets are sold out. So are the tickets to the Post-Event Driver Meet & Greet.

How loud might it actually get?

The 5-ton (or more) machines can produce quite a lot of noise. Average noise levels of 95 to 100 A-weighted decibels (dBA) are expereinced at monster truck rallies, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Noisy Planet project. “Exposure to sounds that are 85 dBA or louder can damage your hearing and put you at risk for noise-induced hearing loss.”

You can bring your own ear protection, or purchase there: “Our concessions staff sells Monster Jam-branded novelty ear protection and disposable ear plugs while supplies last at each event. You may bring your own from home,” Monster Jam says in its FAQs.

Luckily, the open air stadium should help some of the noise escape, but not the excitement.

Did you know?

Monster Jam is produced by Feld Entertainment, the same live touring production company behind other family-friendly events like Disney on Ice, Marvel Universe LIVE!, Sesame Street Live! and Jurassic World Live Tour,

A favorite Philly canned cocktail is expanding nationally for the 2024 summer season https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/philadelphia-surfside-canned-cocktail-expanding-adding-new-flavors/3842069/ 3842069 post 9489347 Cole Quigley for Surfside https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/04/surfside_a518ef-e1714076238267.png?fit=300,173&quality=85&strip=all Whether you’re laying by the beach at the Jersey Shore or sitting back and watching a baseball game, Surfside’s spirit-based ice tea and lemonade is becoming a summer staple.

The Philadelphia-based cocktail brand announced it is adding several new flavors just in time for the 2024 summer season including: Raspberry Lemonade, Strawberry Lemonade, Black Cherry Lemonade, Rasberry Ice Tea and Green Tea.

In a release, Surfside CEO Clement Pappas said, “The addition of the three new lemonade flavors, two new iced teas and the Lemonade Variety 8-pack were highly requested by our fans and is our way of showing love and appreciation for those who have helped us get here.”

Big fan of the original Surfside flavors? Don’t worry; the brand will continue to produce its classic Iced Tea, Peach Tea, Half Tea, Half Lemonade and lemonade.

The Stateside Vodka brand behind Surfside was originally founded in 2022 by two pairs of Philadelphia natives and brothers, Matt and Bryan Quigly and Clement and Zach Pappas.

In the beginning of 2023, the canned cocktail brand sold only to seven states, but that did not stop the company’s sales from spiraling up.

According to a release, in 2023, Surfside sold 1.3 million cases of the drink, a 563 percent increase from the year before.

Their sales averaged about 2.5 cases sold every minute, which encouraged the company to expand to a total of 48 states between 2023 and 2024.

“This is an incredibly exciting time for us as our mission from day one has been to build Surfside into a true national brand,” said Pappas in a release.

At Citizens Bank Park, the drink took over as the Philadelphia Phillies Fans’ favorite drink during the 2023 season.

After seeing success with sales at the ballpark with the Phillies, the spirits-based brand partnered with other MLB teams for the 2024 baseball season.

The Atlanta Braves, Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Guardians, and Pittsburgh Pirates are four teams the brand will become official partners with this summer.

In addition to their new MLB partnerships, the drink will also partner with Minor League Baseball, becoming the official ready-to-drink Vodka Iced Tea and Lemonade for the league.

“We look forward to taking Surfside across the country and introducing to more new fans this upcoming summer season,” Pappas said in a release.

Countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo to take reins of Opera Philadelphia https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/entertainment/the-scene/anthony-roth-costanzo-opera-philadelphia/3841750/ 3841750 post 9488827 Rob Kim/Getty Images for Lincoln Center https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/04/GettyImages-1805109318.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200

What to Know

  • Anthony Roth Costanzo was hired Thursday as general director and president of Opera Philadelphia.
  • Costanzo will continue his career as a leading countertenor while taking over an ambitious company dealing with post-pandemic economic challenges.
  • Opera Philadelphia for 2024-25 dropped its well-regarded season-opening festival, which began in 2017, and lowered next season’s budget to $10 million — of which $1,275,000 is projected to come from ticket revenue. There will be just three mainstage productions.

Anthony Roth Costanzo was hired Thursday as general director and president of Opera Philadelphia and will continue his career as a leading countertenor while taking over an ambitious company dealing with post-pandemic economic challenges.

“Even though I’m an opera singer, it’s my job to ensure the health of this art form I love,” he said in an interview this week. “And the other side of the coin is that I’m frustrated by opera and its inability to always innovate in the ways I think can help it grow. So, it’s something I have been building a skill set for for a long time, and I have been waiting for an opportunity that feels right.”

Constanzo, who turns 42 on May 8, will start work on June 1 and replace David Devan, who is retiring after 13 seasons in charge. Music director Corrado Rovaris has a contract through 2026-27.

Opera Philadelphia for 2024-25 dropped its well-regarded season-opening festival, which began in 2017, and lowered next season’s budget to $10 million — of which $1,275,000 is projected to come from ticket revenue. There will be just three mainstage productions, starting with the U.S. premiere of Missy Mazzoli’s “The Listeners” on Sept. 25.

“They kept this season lean, which gives me some room to move around if I’m successful in bringing more resources,” Constanzo said. “I really feel like some of the future vision that we can build on at Opera Philadelphia is the idea of strategic partnerships and collaborations that help us pool resources and expand our wings beyond the world of opera.”

Costanzo raised the funding for “Glass Handel,” an art installation at Philadelphia’s Barnes Foundation as part of the O18 festival that featured the music of Philip Glass and George Frideric Handel. It included videos, live painting and dance.

“I put together the idea and the creative team, and then I built the budget,” he said in an interview this week. “I remember even driving the truck, the U-Haul truck with the sets in it.”

Board chairman Stephen K. Klasko said 42 people applied for the position. Costanzo impressed with “his optimism and charisma.”

“His ability to have raised a lot of contributor revenue for his programs was pretty incredible,” Klasko said. “We have to build new audiences that are excited about what we’re doing that aren’t necessarily coming out to see `Madame Butterfly.‘”

Costanzo appeared this year in a new production of Thomas Adès’ “The Exterminating Angel” at the Paris Opéra, headlines Gluck’s “Orfeo ed Eurydice” at the Metropolitan Opera starting May 16 and is in the world premiere of Gregory Spears’ “The Righteous” at the Santa Fe Opera starting July 13.

Holding an administrative role while singing is rare but not unprecedented. Soprano Beverly Sills became general director of New York City Opera in 1979 and continued singing for the next year.

How you can help Lucy the Elephant at the Jersey Shore win the title of Best Roadside Attraction in the US https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/lucy-the-elephant-new-jersey-best-contest/3828577/ 3828577 post 4897855 Getty Images https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2019/09/Lucy-the-Elephant-Front-View-Good.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 A historic and beloved attraction at the Jersey Shore is getting some new attention far beyond her beachfront home.

Lucy the Elephant is competing for the title of Best Roadside Attraction in the United States and you can help her get there.

You will likely do a double-take driving by if you’ve never seen Lucy the Elephant in person in Margate, New Jersey.

“Just the significance of her size,” Pat Hendricks of Tansboro, New Jersey, said. “It’s so much different than viewing her on TV.”

The nearly 143-year-old giant beachfront pachyderm is in the running for Best Roadside Attraction in the nation in a USA Today “10 Best” online poll.

“It’s really exciting to be listed with all those other sites,” Lucy the Elephant executive director Richard Helfant told NBC10.

She’s competing against 18 other quirky, eye-catching landmarks including a huge dalmatian fire hydrant in Texas and a sculpture called “Carhenge” in Nebraska as well as a towering Van Gogh inspired painting and easel in Kansas.

“I looked at the whole list. There’s nothing quite like Lucy,” Helfant said.

The beloved Jersey Shore icon and national historic landmark stands six stories high and houses a museum.

Her marketing team is pushing hard to get her as many votes as possible in the survey.

As of Thursday morning, Lucy was at the top of the leaderboard.

“What I recently saw, I think she ranks number one,” Hendricks said. “Just look at her. That says it all.”

The non-profit that runs Lucy hopes this attention will also help bring in donations as it gears up for the third phase of a major restoration project planned to start in September.

It’ll focus on her interior and replace the old gift shop with a state-of-the-art welcome center.

“By being featured in USA Today, which is a national publication, it’s huge. It’s priceless publicity for us whether we win or not,” Helfant explained.

You can vote once a day until Noon on May 6th by clicking here.

USA Today will announce the Top 10 List on May 15th.

Lucy the Elephant is already the country’s oldest roadside attraction. Now, even though she never blinks, she’s staring down the competition to be the best.

‘Temple Proud’: Da’Vine Joy Randolph takes home Oscar for best supporting actress

Randolph — who was the favorite to take home the prize — gave an emotional acceptance speech talking about her journey to becoming an Oscars winner:

“For so long I’ve always wanted to be different,” Randolph said. “And now I realize I just need to be myself.”

Temple celebrated Randolph’s win on social media:

A $2.5 billion transformation is coming to South Philly Sports Complex https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/transforming-south-philly-sports-complex-2-and-a-half-billion/3787910/ 3787910 post 9333350 Comcast Spectacor https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/02/xfinity-plan-1.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 UPDATE: The Philadelphia Phillies have partnered with Comcast Spectacor on the plan. New details here.

There’s a new $2.5 billion plan to transform the South Philadelphia Sports Complex in the coming years.

The plans include upgrades at Xfinity Live!, a 5,000-square-foot concert venue, a new hotel, shopping and restaurants.

Léelo en español aquí

These plans are being considered as “phase 1,” according to a spokesperson from Comcast Spectacor.

Phase 1 will take place in what is currently Lots G and H at the Sports Complex.

“We think we have a great opportunity right here in the sports district,” Chairman and CEO of Comcast Spectacor Dan Hilferty told NBC10. “Really focused on bringing people to this area in addition to times they come for games, concerts, other activities and making it a destination.”

Comcast Spectacor wants tailgaters to know that there is no reason to worry.

“We’re going to make sure that we balance development with not losing the things that make this region so great,” Hilferty said

The concert venue is expected to hold over 5,000 seats and be built in Lot G.

The hotel will be open to both fans of sporting and entertainment events as well as visitors of the City of Brotherly Love.

There are also plans in motion for apartments and office space but nothing’s concrete there yet. These plans would be part of a “phase 2” and would possibly include connections to FDR Park.

“Come here not only to live, not only to attend games and concerts but to make a thriving neighborhood that is really an anchor in the South Philadelphia area,” Hilferty explained. “I think it will be good, like a breath of fresh air, new restaurants, new stores.”

Some fans in South Philly were excited to hear about the improvements.

Others, like the general manager of the Philadium, shared concerns about how the development might impact local businesses near the complex.

“If there’s no reason for people to step outside of the sports arenas and venues, I think the rest of the neighborhood suffers,” Jamie Kelly said.

Meanwhile, one woman we spoke with praised the plan hoping it might convince the Sixers to stay in South Philly.

“I don’t think it should be changed from how it is. I think everything being in one place is awesome,” she said.

A spokesperson for 76 DevCo said the development plans have no bearing whatsoever on their plans to move to Market East when their lease expires in 2031.

Still, Comcast Spectacor said they hope the Sixers might consider sticking around.

“The hope would be that the Sixers remain here as our 50/50 partner,” Hilferty said.

The goal is for construction on the hotel and event venue to begin sometime in 2025 or 2026.

Comcast is the parent company of Comcast Spectator and of NBC10.

The ‘Choco Taco' is making a comeback, thanks to Taco Bell https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/entertainment/the-scene/the-choco-taco-is-making-a-comeback-thanks-to-taco-bell/3779695/ 3779695 post 9310969 Smith Collection/Gado/Getty Images https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/02/GettyImages-1479057245.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,225 When Klondike announced the iconic Choco Taco was being discontinued in the summer of 2022, the bad news triggered a veritable meltdown. The ice cream truck staple, a genius sideways twist on a waffle cone invented in 1983, was just shy of 40 years old.

Generations of kids and adults alike had grown to love that winning combo of chocolate-coated, peanut-flecked crunchy shell with a “creamy inside” (somewhat disconcertingly not called ice cream) rippled through with fudge swirls. Some people hoarded them in their freezers; others tried making them at home.

But if your own stash has long since run out, you can breathe a sigh of sweet relief. A version of the Choco Taco is coming back this summer — thanks to a fast-food chain that knows a little something about tacos.

As part of its new menu items for 2024, Taco Bell partnered with Portland-based ice cream company Salt & Straw to create the Ice Cream Chocolate Taco, which features waffle cones, cinnamon ancho ice cream dipped in chocolate and topped with toasted brown rice.

Before taking over as the new CEO of Taco Bell, Sean Tresvant had spent time in Portland, Oregon. It was there that he became familiar with local favorite ice cream maker, Salt & Straw, which has been churning out its own take on a Choco Taco — known as the “Chocolate Tacolate” — for over a decade. So when Tresvant wanted to explore the idea for Taco Bell, he knew just whom to call.

“We had no idea how or where this special recipe could ever make it to a larger platform,” Tyler Malek, Salt & Straw’s head chef and co-founder, told TODAY.com. And while you might think an ice cream expert would be used to getting “cold” calls, he wasn’t expecting this one. A visit to the Taco Bell test kitchen soon followed.

“I always loved the layers upon layers of texture in an ice cream taco,” Malek said. “Your teeth rattle through waffle cone, chocolate, ice cream and more chocolate. We tried to lean into that.”

The collaboration, which will be available to order nationwide, is the Choco Taco you know and love — but with “a bit of a gourmet twist,” as Malek puts it. “The ice cream is slightly spiced and has significantly more butterfat and less air than anything you’ve had before. We use an especially dark chocolate that still holds a rich flavor even after being frozen. On the very top of the taco, we wanted a bit of crunch, so found a rare blend of toasted brown rice that has that effect while also adding an evocative, almost toasty characteristic.”

In keeping with one of the biggest food trends on menus right now, sweet and spicy (or “swicy”) items, they developed sweet hot sauces for dipping to complete the treat.

For devoted fans of the original, Malek promises the new Choco Taco will scratch the itch, while just maybe delivering on something even better.

“This is what I always romantically dreamt of the old treat tasting like, but that they never lived up to.”

Fast foodies are getting fed up with price hikes at the drive-thru https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/national-international/fast-foodies-are-getting-fed-up-with-price-hikes-at-the-drive-thru/3769811/ 3769811 post 9282579 Jeffrey Greenberg/Universal Images Group via Getty Images https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/02/GettyImages-1840664696.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200

Look no further than the fast-food drive-thru for evidence of inflation fatigue.

Food companies have been passing along higher labor and ingredient costs to consumers long after inflation peaked at 9.1% in June 2022. Diners are getting fed up, eating less fast food and griping on social media that their go-to cheap meals aren’t so cheap anymore, according to data reviews by NBC News.

Sales show it. McDonald’s reported underwhelming results in the fourth quarter, and Yum Brands showed weaker-than-expected growth in its top brands, which include KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut.

Fast-food executives are taking note. McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski told analysts Monday that consumers are becoming more discriminating with their dollars, and he promised the company would focus more on affordability this year.

Kempczinski noted that consumers earning $45,000 or less annually were favoring comparatively cheaper groceries over Mickey D’s, opting to cook their own meals more often.

“Eating at home has become more affordable,” he said. “The battleground is certainly with that low-income consumer.”

Some common grocery items have been falling in price. In the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Price Index, the food at home category rose only 1.3% between December 2022 and December 2023, but food away from home rose 5.2%.

Long known for its Dollar Menu, McDonald’s was recently pilloried online for a Connecticut restaurant’s $18 Big Mac combo meals and $7 Egg McMuffin.

McDonald’s told NBC News that pricing is up to franchisees and can vary by location but that the company strives to strike a balance for value.

In recent years, many fast-food companies have expanded offerings and tweaked their restaurants to try to attract as many customers as possible across income levels. McDonald’s recently upgraded its famous burgers and opened a new concept called CosMc’s, all while leaning into nostalgia.

But inflation-scarred diners may care more about price, said Laura Murphy, managing director of Bolt PR who specializes in food and beverage marketing.

“People are really telling fast food QSR [quick-service restaurant] industry leaders, ‘This is what we’re looking for, this is what we want: We want efficiency. We want affordability.’”

Meanwhile, Taco Bell is leaning in on its value menu, promoting 10 items for $3 or less. The company told NBC News it “remains dedicated to offering our fans delicious food at affordable prices.”

This isn’t the first time in recent years that consumers have balked at menu price hikes, or taken to social media to gripe about them.

Yum CEO David Gibbs told Yahoo Finance last year that the company was planning more modest price increases than the ones it implemented in 2022. Amid the latest quarter’s disappointing results, Yum announced plans to juice sales at KFC by launching a smashed potato bowl and the chicken chain’s first loyalty program.

Some major food and beverage brands operating in the Middle East — including McDonald’s, Starbucks and Yum — have said conflict in the region and related boycotts have also dented business. Burger King’s parent company warned in November that the turmoil there threatened to pile on top of other global pressures, from the war in Ukraine to Covid-19, that have already driven up costs over the last few years.

That could potentially “have an adverse impact on our business and results of operations if we and our franchisees are not able to adjust prices sufficiently … without negatively impacting consumer demand,” the company told investors.

Bucking the trend, Chipotle’s sales rose 8.4% in the fourth quarter and foot traffic improved, too, after a 3% menu price hike back in October. The company credited the return of carne asada with helping drive the growth.

With prices for almost everything higher today than three years ago, even though inflation has slowed sharply, Murphy said what matters most in today’s fast-food industry are cost and convenience.

“Let’s go back to really making sure that we’re providing simple food in an affordable way that’s efficient, quick, and it gives people really the basics of what they’re looking for,” she said.

‘You Enjoy Myself': When camping, concert passes for Phish's Mondegreen in Delaware go on sale https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/entertainment/the-scene/phish-mondegreen-woodlands-delaware-tickets-camping/3748026/ 3748026 post 9221411 Keith Griner/Getty Images for ABA https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/01/GettyImages-1721845888.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 This is the music festival ticket news that Phish fans have been “Bouncing Around the Room” to hear.

Months after fans of Phish revealed would be turning Delaware’s the Woodlands — better known as the home of Firefly — into a “Farmhouse,” the “Chalkdust Torture” is over for all those “Fluffheads” waiting to grab tickets to the four-day music festival called Mondegreen.

Tickets to Mondegreen go on sale this week, Phish — the iconic improvisational band known for long jams — said in a coordinated attack Tuesday announcing details for the August 2024 festival in Dover, Delaware. “Everything’s Right” on its website and social media channels.

“Mondegreen will see Phish performing over four days and nights, alongside an array of interactive fan experiences, specially curated regional food and drink, art installations, and much more,” Phish wrote.

Here’s the shakedown that every guy looking to be a “Lawn Boy” for a weekend in August needs to know:

What are the dates for Phish’s Mondegreen festival in Delaware?

The festival takes places from Thursday Aug. 15 to Sunday Aug. 18 in the summer of 2024.

Where is The Woodlands?

Ok, “Harry Hood,” you might recall the Firefly festival that took over Delaware for a decade before taking a break in 2023. The massive grounds are located next to Dover Motor Speedway. The site is easily accessible from U.S. Route 13 and Delaware Route 1.

Phish explained why they chose the site: “Centrally located with easy access from all points in the northeast and mid-Atlantic, the festival site will feature an abundance of on-site camping, with many nearby hotel options also available.”

When do Phish Mondegreen tickets go on sale?

Fans of Trey Anastasio, Jon Fishman, Mike Gordon and Page McConnell have been “Wading in the Velvet Sea” since September for this “Bliss.”

Travel packages go on sale on Thursday, Jan. 18 at 11 a.m. ET. Weekend festival tickets and camping passes go on sale Friday, Jan. 19 at 11 a.m. ET.

What do you need to know about camping and jamming in The Woodlands?

Camping will open at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15 and must be cleared by noon on Monday, Aug. 19. Phish will be selling early car arrival camping passes that get you in a day early.

“General Admission camping includes access to shared bathroom and shower facilities, as well as Camping Pods equipped with knowledgeable staff, free water refill, charging, trash/recycling drop off, shared charcoal grills, nightly bonfires, and genetically-engineered Mosquitoez,” according to the festival site.

Want to be closer to the action “My Friend, My Friend?” The Glen Close and Full Monde packages are being offered with close proximity to the concert venue so you won’t have to “Run Like an Antelope” to not miss the first note.

Campers in these areas get “access to air-conditioned bathrooms with flushable toilets and showers, express entry to the concert venue, a dedicated hospitality host, and exclusive… food, beverage, and hospitality experiences,” according to organizers.

How much money will you need to ‘Tweezer’ out of your wallet to ‘Jibboo’?

According to the Mondegreen website, general admission to all four dates and camping starts at $450. The Glen Close and Full Monde areas cost $650, including fees.

You will still need to purchase a pass for your car or RV and that’s where things get a bit more confusing.

GA car camping passes for Thursday admission are $130, including fees. Wednesday arrival car camping costs $150 per vehicle. Up to six people can be in each car.

Art of the Brick: Get a look inside world's largest display of Lego art at Philly's Franklin Institute https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/worlds-largest-display-of-lego-art-returning-to-the-franklin-institute/3741940/ 3741940 post 9304369 NBC10 https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/02/ARt-of-the-Brick-Franklin-Institute-triptych.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all The Art of the Brick,” a traveling exhibition featuring the world’s largest display of Lego art, is returning to the Franklin Institute in February.

The popular art collection showcases more than 100 creative and inspiring pieces by renowned contemporary artist Nathan Sawaya.

“I don’t have a favorite, they’re all my favorite, they’re like my kids,” Sawaya told NBC10’s Sheila Watko while previewing the exhibit opening.

The exhibit was highly successful at the Franklin Institute in 2015 and featured several creations never before seen in Philadelphia including designs created by Sawaya.

“PERNiCiEM: The Endangered Species Connection”, will be a new collection to Philadelphia. This exhibit is an innovative multimedia collaboration between Sawaya and award-winning photographer Dean West that aims to creatively raise awareness of some of the world’s most endangered species.

“The PERNiCiEM collection is a creative and powerful way to illustrate the urgent issue of extinction,” Artist Nathan Sawaya explained in a news release. “We traveled the globe to find different locations where these actual endangered species would be in their natural environment, but we wanted to use the Lego brick versions to convey the message that they are endangered, and we need to act.”

The exhibit will also include reimagined versions of Basquiat’s “Pez Dispenser”, Frida Kahlo’s “The Frame”, Hilma af Klint’s “The Swan No. 17” and “Decisions”, a gravity-defying work comprising 112,306 bricks, making it Sawaya’s largest piece yet.

You also don’t want to miss the chance to also see the iconic fan favorite, “Yellow”, a life-size sculpture of a man ripping his chest open with thousands of yellow Lego bricks cascading from the cavity or the 20-foot-long T-Rex dinosaur skeleton made from bricks.

Once you’re done walking through the main exhibit the fun doesn’t stop there. There will be a 9,000-square-foot brick play space with hundreds of thousands of Lego bricks spread across five stations where people of all ages can create their own designs.

“The ART OF THE BRICK is a remarkable exhibit that blends art, math, science, and engineering, showcasing the interdisciplinary nature of creativity,” President and CEO of The Franklin Institute Larry Dubinski said in a news release. “Philadelphia is an art and science city, and we are thrilled to bring this extraordinary exhibition back to the region and our community.”

The exhibition opens Feb. 17 and runs through Sept. 2. For information and to purchase your tickets click here.

Hershey sued for selling Reese's without ‘cute looking' decorations shown on packaging https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/national-international/hershey-sued-for-selling-reeses-without-cute-looking-pumpkin-faces-shown-on-packaging/3734764/ 3734764 post 9185235 Luke Sharrett/Bloomberg via Getty Images https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/01/web-240102-reeses-hersheys-getty.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 A Florida woman believes that recently-sold Halloween-themed Reese’s Peanut Butter products were all trick and no treat.

Cynthia Kelly is suing The Hershey Company because its holiday-shaped chocolates did not contain the carved decorative designs pictured on the Reese’s packaging. The lawsuit, which NBC South Florida reported is seeking $5 million in damages, states that the packaging included “explicit carved out artistic designs” like a smiling jack-o-lantern face, the eyes and mouth of a ghost or the laces of a football.

The proposed federal class action filed Thursday in Tampa, Florida district court alleges the company deceived Kelly and other customers who were expecting the carved decorations on the Reese’s products and using misleading packaging to boost sales.

The lawsuit said Hershey’s labels “are materially misleading and numerous consumers have been tricked and misled by the pictures on the products’ packaging.”

Kelly, the lawsuit states, would not have purchased the Reese’s chocolate pumpkin if not for the “cute looking” carving of a jack-o-lantern face she noticed while near the checkout registers at a supermarket. The lawsuit cites YouTube videos from other consumers expressing disappointment over the undecorated chocolates, one of which highlights the small text on the packaging that says “decorating suggestion.”

According to the lawsuit, the packaging for the same candies changed two to three years ago when the chocolate was accurately displayed without carved designs.

Todd Scott, a spokesperson for Hershey, told The Washington Post that the company does not comment on pending litigation.
